Nick has been recognized as one of the nation’s top litigators, with decades of experience handling high‑stakes disputes and investigations. He represents individuals, corporations, and institutions in complex commercial, securities, antitrust, and regulatory matters in trial and appellate courts nationwide.

Nick’s practice spans courtroom litigation and behind‑the‑scenes advocacy, including negotiations with federal and state authorities that have resulted in declinations, non‑prosecution agreements, and favorable resolutions for clients facing significant exposure. He has successfully defended clients across industries in criminal and civil proceedings, whistleblower actions, and business disputes involving substantial financial and reputational risk, achieving landmark jury verdicts, acquittals, and trial victories. 

Across his 40-year career, Nick has represented clients in some of the most consequential business disputes of their time. His work has included representing: Texaco in its landmark litigation with Pennzoil; Tyco during its leadership crisis; groups of bondholders in Argentina’s sovereign debt litigation; multiple Lloyd’s syndicates in matters arising from Hurricane Katrina; and Maurice “Hank” Greenberg, former AIG chair, in more than a decade of engagements. Known for handling sensitive matters of corporate and personal significance, Nick has advised companies including Authentic Brands Group, Carnival Corporation, The Related Companies, Calvin Klein, Sigma Lithium, Rumble, SBC Corp., and Bolt, and he previously represented the FDIC and RTC during the savings and loan crisis.

Nick has earned enduring recognition from the legal industry. He is a Lawdragon “Legend” after more than 15 years on its list of the 500 Leading Lawyers in America. He has been repeatedly honored by Benchmark Litigation and Best Lawyers, and has been named to the Top 100 New York Metro Super Lawyers list eight times, including each of the past five years. 

Nick also has a long record of civic and philanthropic leadership, including serving as board chair for several nonprofit institutions and holding appointments to key legal and judicial oversight bodies. He has a deep commitment to public service, the legal profession, and nonprofit governance.

Nick earned his JD from Columbia Law School and his BS and BA, magna cum laude, from Duke University.

Experience

  • Won a $663 million jury verdict against a manufacturer of highway guardrails — the largest verdict ever returned in a whistleblower action without intervention and assistance from the US Department of Justice.
  • Secured an acquittal for three leading New York City real estate companies indicted for securities fraud under New York’s Martin Act.
  • Secured a jury verdict vindicating foreign exchange traders at Banque Indosuez, who were accused of executing hundreds of millions of dollars of unauthorized trades.
  • Won a lengthy trial for the co-founder of AriZona Iced Tea, related to the valuation of the Company.
  • Won a jury verdict in Los Angeles federal court for a nationally-known mystery writer in a Lanham Act action against a major publishing house.
  • Won the acquittal of a defendant charged with arson in New York Supreme Court in a groundbreaking “false confession” case.
  • Achieved a hung jury while defending an anesthesiologist in a high profile insurance fraud case in New York federal court.
  • Defended Starr International Company in its victory at trial over American International Group (AIG) in a dispute over the ownership of billions of dollars of AIG stock.
